About two thirds of our planet Earth is covered with water. Yet only 0.3 per cent of it is available as fresh drinking water. And that is even distributed very unevenly regionally. While a European in average uses about 150 litres of drinking water per person per day, many people in Africa and other parts of the world need to cope with less then 20 litres per day. And many of them have to walk on foot for hours to get it.

On the occasion of Earth Day on April 22nd, Gardena wants to remind people of the worth of this scarce resource and appeal to them to use drinking water responsibly. According to a study for the European Commission the personal use of water could be lowered by almost 50 per cent from 150 litres to 80 litres per day. In many areas of daily life precious drinking water can even be replaced by using collected rain water instead.

A reduced use of water is also good for your wallet. That is because the cost for water has risen considerably during the past years.

Efficient solutions for the private garden

The simplest way to use water in your garden more responsibly is to use a Gardena trigger nozzle. Only when the trigger is pulled, water is running. As soon as it is released, the water stops. And so no water is spoiled even when the hose is mindlessly left behind.

Even more efficient is the use of an automatic irrigation system – for instance with a watering control with soil moisture sensor as well as an individually adjustable drip irrigation with the Gardena Micro-Drip-System. It even allows supplying the plants below ground directly at the roots without any loss by evaporation.

For watering the lawn there is the Gardena Sprinklersystem. It can be controlled in a way that it automatically starts the irrigation in the nightly hours. Even on hot summer days the soil has then cooled down sufficiently to reduce the effects of evaporation. Studies show a potential of reducing water quantities by more than half.

Those who want a beautiful and well-kept garden should not do without watering. But for nature’s sake and for the own wallet they should use efficient solutions and systems that save water.
